Communicating disconnection from reality: Home project process

This quarter in Art III, we began a new home project. I chose to do a performance piece; but, I have a clearer vision of the actual performance than I do the title of the performance. For now, the best I can think to call it is "Disconnection from reality":

  • Inspiration: Sometimes, when schoolwork begins to become really heavy, I become very stressed trying to balance my schedule with extracurriculars and sleep. Once all the due dates have passed, I go to sleep and wake up and look at the bedroom around me, and only then do I realize that it looks like a hog rampaged through my bedroom. This piece is meant to convey the feeling of becoming so isolated from your surroundings that you don't even realize what you're doing; and when you return to consciousness, it's as if the changes to the environment around you was done by someone else.

  • Concept: Throughout my performance, I'll sit down on the floor (probably with my back leaning against a wall) with a box on my head to convey isolation from surroundings. Around me, things will happen over time without realizing (before the performance, I'll set up mechanisms that will trigger with the passage of time, like the burning of a candle or the melting of ice).

  • Problems: I have yet to come up with a good title for this performance that summarizes the message I'm trying to convey.
