Here is my reaction to a lecture given by the weaver based in Maryland, Noelani Jones.

"the moment felt right", 2023: link

  • It's cool how the content of Noelani Jones' art is so in sync with the medium that she works with: "strengthening bonds" and "world wide web" pairs very well with weaving!

  • It's even COOLER that she has her own sheep that she harvests wool from and grows her own dye --- she also has a very strong bond with nature.

  • Residency life sounds CRAZY. I see now that it is a little bit like modern day patronage.

  • Listening to her talk about her work, the sheer volume of the work that she has produced seems crazy. She also holds a lot of different art-related and is very connected to art community in general. It's interesting to listen to the experiences of someone with a very developed professional artistic career --- between her residencies, she said she had "time to weave", which I thought was funny, because she is always weaving.

  • It's also cool how her weaving compositions inspired by natural lanscapes or patterns. She has explored many different dimensions of her craft, and still seems to have more to explore.
