My Arms Might Fall Off: Wood carving process

In Art III, we have started a wood carving project. The assignment is to create a composition that responds to the prompt, "It's all about time," and carve it into a block of wood during class time.

I'm pretty happy with my progress so far. I have to switch hands, switch positions, and take breaks really often because my arms and hands get sore.

My main goal right now is to carve down the negative space around 1-2 inches so that I can begin forming the figure's body.

Starting out, it was very difficult to tell what my subject was because the marks were so chaotic. At this point, I was mostly working on getting the technique down.

Adding more marks help differentiate positive (figure) from negative (water) space. At this point, my goal is the carve down enough around the body in order to create form.
